Full centre court, great atmosphere and Alexander Zverev confidently in the quarter-finals of the BMW Open by Bitpanda. There was no sign of the weak phase in recent weeks. After slight difficulties in the first game, the tournament's number one quickly got to grips with the match against Daniel Altmaier, and after breaking for 3:1, Zverev took the first set 6:3. The second set was "a bit more complicated", as Zverev said after the match, but the world number three was not rattled by Altmaier's break and countered.
After 1:20 hours, he capitalised on his fourth match point to win (6:3; 6:2). Zverev said that he loved playing in Munich and was looking forward to the next few days. The two-time tournament winner still seems to have a lot planned.
The young fans of the BMW Open by Bitpanda in particular kept their fingers crossed for him and shooting star Ben Shelton came out on top. The US-American defeated two-time BMW Open finalist Botic van de Zandschulp from the Netherlands in two sets (7:6; 6:3). "I couldn't be happier," he said after the match and thanked the spectators for coming. The bundle of energy was particularly impressive with his fast forehand. His opponent in the quarter-finals is Luciano Darderi from Italy.
The German Davis Cup duo Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz have reached the quarter-finals of the doubles competition. The pair are seeded number one at the BMW Open by Bitpanda and, as expected, defeated the Indian-American pairing of Yuki Bhambri/Robert Galloway (6:4, 7:6).
And the young German doubles pairing of Max Hans Rehberg and Justin Engel also surprisingly reached the quarter-finals. The pair knocked the number two seeds Marcel Granollers/Horacio Zeballos (Spain/Argentina) out of the competition (7:5; 7:5). The crowd went wild and after the match point was converted there was a "chest bump" out of sheer enthusiasm.
